Sunnyside is slated to be a historic district on the National Register! Becoming a National Register neighborhood is a long process, but fortunately, we are through the most difficult part and are now moving forward.

The official nomination for Sunnyside as a National Register historic district is currently underway, but did you know there could be advantages for you now? If you are anticipating any major renovations to your home, there may be tax incentives available. You must spend a total of $25,000 or more over a period of two years, but you can earn 30% of the value back in tax credits.

Certain guidelines must be followed, including an application process and submittal of before/after pictures. For details, review “Historic Preservation Tax Incentives” at www.cr.nps.gov/hps/tps/ tax/IRSQ_A.htm, or call David Christenbury with the NC State Historic Preservation Office at (919) 733-6547 x. 234.

Sherry Wyatt has been selected as project consultant and is in charge, which will include a detailed study of Sunnyside and the houses within our neighborhood. Sunnyside is filled with wonderful homes full of character and details from an age of craftsmanship long past. If you are interested in researching the history or architectural style of your home, please contact LeAnn Pegram, a Historic Resource Officer for Forsyth Co. at 747-7054; or your fellow neighbor, Nicole Kugel at 722- 6438.
